The Big Ideas Driving Automotive Retail Forward at Digital Dealer 2026

Digital Dealer 2026 brought dealership leaders, marketers, sales professionals, and technology experts together for two days of conversations about a common challenge: how can dealers turn the data they already have into more meaningful customer engagement and measurable revenue?

At Booth #415, the PureCars team connected with dealers from across the country to talk about the evolving automotive retail landscape and what it takes to bring marketing, customer intelligence, sales, and service closer together.

Beyond the product demonstrations, several themes consistently came up in conversations throughout the show.

From Disconnected Data to One Customer View

Dealerships have no shortage of customer data. The challenge is making sense of it.

DMS, CRM, service, website, equity, and third-party data often live in separate systems, making it difficult to understand the full customer relationship. A major topic at Digital Dealer was the need to move toward a single, cleansed customer profile that gives sales, service, and marketing a shared view of the customer.

With a more connected customer record, dealers can move beyond individual interactions and understand the broader ownership journey.

Finding Opportunities Before They Become Obvious

Another recurring conversation centered on predictive data.

Rather than relying on manual list pulls or static reports, dealers are looking for ways to continuously identify the customers most likely to be ready for their next vehicle or service opportunity.

Changes in equity, service patterns, lease maturity, purchase behavior, and other signals can indicate that a customer may be moving toward their next decision.

The opportunity is no longer simply having the data. It's identifying the signal early enough to do something with it.

Moving From Alerts to Activation

Knowing that a customer is in-market is only the first step.

Dealers also discussed the importance of connecting predictive insights directly to action. Instead of requiring a salesperson or marketing team to manually pull a list, determine an audience, build a campaign, and execute outreach, opportunities can increasingly trigger the appropriate next step automatically.

That could mean a targeted digital ad, a personalized offer, or a notification to the sales team.

The conversation is shifting from "Who should I contact?" to "How can the right action happen automatically?"

Making Every Marketing Dollar Work Harder

With increasing pressure to demonstrate marketing performance, advertising efficiency was another major theme at the show.

Broad targeting can reach a lot of people, but it doesn't necessarily reach the people most likely to buy. Dealers are increasingly looking at how first-party data, predictive signals, and AI-driven audiences can help focus advertising on customers and prospects with a higher likelihood of being in-market.

The goal isn't simply more impressions or clicks. It's making marketing spend more relevant and connecting it to actual dealership opportunities.

AI's Role Is Moving From Conversation to Action

AI was, unsurprisingly, part of many conversations at Digital Dealer. But the discussion went beyond generative content and chatbots.

Dealers are increasingly interested in how AI can work with their customer data to identify patterns, predict buyer behavior, build smarter audiences, and determine which customers may be most likely to take action.

That creates an important shift: AI isn't just helping dealers understand what happened. It can help them anticipate what could happen next and determine how to act on it.

A More Connected Customer Experience

When marketing, sales, and service operate from different customer information, the customer can feel the disconnect.

One department may send an offer another department doesn't know about. A customer may receive communications that don't reflect their recent activity. Or a dealership may miss an opportunity because the relevant information never made it to the right team.

Connecting customer intelligence across the dealership creates the opportunity for a more consistent experience, with more relevant communication and fewer redundant interactions.

Measuring What Matters

Perhaps the biggest underlying theme at Digital Dealer was the need to connect technology to outcomes.

Dealers don't need more dashboards simply for the sake of having more data. They need visibility into whether their strategies are generating meaningful opportunities and revenue.

That means looking beyond activity metrics to outcomes such as conquest opportunities, retention, service revenue, repeat purchases, and overall marketing efficiency.

Bringing Marketing and Customer Intelligence Together

The conversations at Digital Dealer reinforced an important shift happening across automotive retail: marketing and customer intelligence can no longer operate in separate lanes.

When first-party data, predictive intelligence, digital advertising, customer engagement, and reporting work together, dealers have a clearer path from identifying an opportunity to taking action on it.

That is where the complementary strengths of PureCars and AutoAlert come into focus, bringing together marketing performance and customer intelligence to help dealers generate more qualified opportunities, strengthen retention, and engage customers throughout the ownership lifecycle.

Digital Dealer 2026 was a valuable reminder that the future of automotive retail isn't simply about having more technology.

It's about connecting the right data, intelligence, and action so dealers can make better decisions and customers can have better experiences.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by Booth #415, shared their challenges, and joined the conversation. We look forward to continuing it long after the expo floor closed.
